Prawirotaman Area
Prawirotaman is a well-known area in Yogyakarta. It came into prominence in the 19th century as the “kampong” (village), where soldiers of the Yogyakarta Sultanate Special Forces called “Prawirotomo” resided. The Prawirotomo soldiers were renowned for their fighting skills and could never be defeated.

The word “Prawirotomo” combines “prawiro” and “tomo”. In the Kawi – Sanskrit language, “prawiro” means a brave officer or soldier, while “tomo” means clever or wise. Every Prawirotomo soldier was expected to be a brave and clever warrior, to be wise in the ways of battle.
The descendants of the Prawirotomo continued to reside in the Prawirotaman Kampong. In the post-independence period, the village became known in the 1950s – 1960s as a center of the batik industry – managed by the descendants of the Prawirotomo.
